Task answer
The graph illustrates the proportion of the population residing in urban areas in four Asian countries—Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia—between 1970 and 2020, with projections for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, the percentage of urban dwellers increased steadily in all four countries over the observed period, and this trend is expected to continue in the future. Malaysia consistently had the highest urban population, while the Philippines saw the slowest rate of urbanization.
In 1970, Malaysia had the largest share of urban residents, at approximately 30%, followed closely by the Philippines, while Thailand and Indonesia had lower urbanization levels, around 20% each. Over the next five decades, Malaysia's urban population rose sharply, surpassing 75% by 2020, and is expected to exceed 80% by 2040.
Indonesia and Thailand also experienced significant growth, reaching around 50% and 45%, respectively, by 2020. Forecasts indicate that Indonesia will continue to urbanize at a rapid pace, potentially surpassing Thailand by 2040. Meanwhile, the Philippines, which started with a relatively high urban population, grew at a slower rate, reaching just above 45% in 2020 and is expected to increase gradually in the coming decades.
