Task answer

To many people, the development of mankind is the ultimate goal of science. Personally, I agree that raising life standards is a crucial goal that the subject should head towards, but there are other vital targets that also need to be considered. Improving people's life is a hugely important aim for science. First, it is due to the enormous potential of the field. Science has undeniably changed every aspects of our lives, from simple everyday activities to macroscopic fixtures as economy and society. As a result, this power, if not used with humanity development in mind, can bring disastrous consequences. Consider nuclear power as an example: it has provided electricity to millions of people around the world, but has also taken thousands of innocent lives in the form of nuclear bombs. In addition, having human lives improvement as a goal can encourage ethical research practices. Surveys have shown that when concerning human health, the researches that focus on human health usually have higher ethical ratings than others, suggesting a positive effect of working for human life improvements on the researchers' perspective. On the other hand, if scientists only focus on raising life standards, we would certainly miss out on numerous breakthroughs. One reason for this pertains to theoretical researches, which cannot readily be applied to the real world but have the potential to in the future. The use of theoretical studies is simply to broaden the subject's horizon. Therefore, the utilization of the results requires integration of different fields of study and sufficient innovativeness, which does not necessarily come from the author. For an example, consider prime number research: a significant number of mathematicians devote their lives to the study of the special properties of such numbers, which before the 1960s, only contributed to the development of algebra. However, computer experts realized their implications in cybersecurity, and prime numbers have become indispensable in encoding some of the most private systems on the planet. In conclusion, although elevating life standards is a crucial goal that science should head towards, there are other aims worth considering as well. We should strike a balance to ensure the greatest success to the development of mankind.
