Task answer

There are many concerns pertaining to the environment, one of the most serious is the amount of waste accumulated rocketing for a multitude of reasons. However, there are many measures that policy makers can take to alleviate the problem. There are two main causes for the rise in rubbish output. First, the advancement of technology since the Industrial revolution has enabled us to manufacture products considerably quicker and cheaper. In the past when mass production was not as prominent, the reusing and recycling of old items were much more common, due to the lack of ready-made materials, thus generating very little waste. Moreover, thanks to the relatively stable economy maintained by peace, the annual income of the average workers have risen, which contributes to elevated consumption power. Since we can buy most of what is needed at supermarkets, a decreased awareness of the need to recycle naturally follows. To sum up, since there are more goods and people have more money to buy them, reusing becomes less necessary, thus promoting the trend of rubbish accumulation. On the other hand, there are numerous solutions that governments can offer to help reduce the amount of rubbish produced. One of them is by introducing stricter measures, such as an increase in taxes or fines when the amount of waste generated exceeds a certain threshold, thereby forcing companies to adapt to more environmentally friendly practices. This has been implemented by Singapore and witnessed great results, as Singapore is still one of the countries with the highest GDP and lowest waste index. In addition, governments can increase funding for companies or laboratories that focus on rubbish reduction, encouraging the invention of more efficient and less expensive technologies. As an example, the Denmark congress allocates huge amounts of money for a corporation that monopolizes the waste management of the country. Consequentially, the efficient work done by the company results in Denmark being one of the areas that contributes the least to the rubbish in the word. In conclusion, although technology and the economy has shaped our society into one that generates waste irresponsibly, governments can help with alleviating the issue by many effective solutions.
