Task answer

The figure illustrates the opening year, the length of train pathways and the number of users per year of the underground railway infrastructure in six cities: London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles. Overall, there is a negative correlation between the age of the systems and the length of routes available. Tokyo underground observes the highest number of passengers in a year. There are four underground transport systems built before 1981, including London, Paris, Tokyo and Washington DC, all of which have route length larger than 100km and more than 100 million passengers per year. London's subway infrastructure was established the earliest in 1863, and spanning the greatest distance of 394km. However, its popularity only ranks third at 775 million people per year with only 40% the passenger rates of Tokyo of 1927 million, the third opened metro in 1927. Paris subway network stands second in all the recorded data: built the second in 1900, with a railway length of 199km and 1991 million visitors yearly. In contrast, Washington ranks the last in every index: established in 1976, covering only 126km and welcoming 144 million people per year. Shifting the focus to the more modern networks set up after 1981, containing Kyoto (1981) and Los Angeles (2001). Uniquely against the trend, although Kyoto railway system is the second newest, the distance it covers and the number of visitors are both the smallest (11 km and 45 million, respectively). Contrastingly, Los Angeles subway has 28km of route and 50 million passengers per year.
