The amount of plastic thrown to the sea has risen so high that it has become a hazard to the habitat. Fortunately, there are many measures that can be taken to alleviate the situation. One of the solutions relies on legislation. First, there should be heavier fines corresponding with the total plastic trash produced by companies. Corporations may be forced to submit annual reports on the sum of industrial polymer waste and the percentage recycled, for which they will be punished if exceeded a certain level. This has been enacted in Singapore with great success, allowing the country to have the cleanest beaches without compromising the economy. In addition, more fundings should be allocated to companies that research on or specialize in the reusage and biodegradable materials that can replace plastic. An example of this is Denmark, with a huge government budget dedicated yearly to a business that focuses on plastic recycling, enjoys some of the most beautiful seas in Europe partly thanks to their effective work. Moreover, this issue can be tackled by focusing on education. One of the most important agendas is raising the awareness of children on the severity and the negative effects of plastic pollution in oceans. Thereby, they recognize the need to reduce the use of this material in their daily lives and encourage others to do the same, resulting in the decrease in household polymer waste. Furthermore, beach cleanups can be organized by schools as extracurricular activities, which help both with promoting alertness and allowing the children to contribute directly to the alleviation of the problem. The school children can also be encouraged to take part in researches concerning the issue, thus improving their scientific skills and potentially leads to breakthrough incentives. In conclusion, although ocean plastic pollution is concerning, there are many ways that governments and education facilities can contribute to solving it.
