Task answer
The overconsumption of sweeteners leading to detrimental bodily functions has become prevalent. To alleviate this issue, many people have suggested increasing the price of food high in sugar contents. Personally, I believe this can be effective, but there must be additional solutions.
It is undeniable that this policy has numerous positive implications, on individual and societal levels. On the personal effects, higher costs may deter consumers from buying sugary snacks in excessive quantities, which contributes to healthier eating habits. Additionally, the new law can have large social impacts, namely on the food industry and healthcare systems. In particular, in order to retain their customers and keep the manufacture overlay constant, companies will have to reformulate their products, replacing sweeteners with less harmful alternatives. This will result in a healthier food market on a large scale, thus improving public health significantly. Consequently, less money and time would be wasted on diabetes-related treatments, improving the quality and affordability of healthcare facilities considerably. To sum up, because there are both public health and economic benefits to this solution, it should be supported.
On the other hand, it is worth acknowledging that increasing the prices of sugar-rich food alone is not sufficient for the goal. For one, the policy will significantly affect lower-income households, which are the most prevalent buyers of these products. Surveys have shown that families that are below the poverty line are at a 30% higher risk of consuming food containing a lot of artificial sweeteners, due to the lower prices and the children’s willingness to eat them. Raising this expense, therefore, would put unimaginable strain on these already struggling households. As a result, better alternatives should be introduced. For example, children should be educated from a young age about what a healthy diet consists of, hence, they will naturally opt for lower-sugar food. This has been successfully shown by Japan, whose low obesity rate is attributed to good eating habits taught to the people since they were young.
In conclusion, I believe that raising the cost of sugary foods should be implemented because of the physiological and economic benefits, but other measures have to be undertaken to improve its effectiveness and the livelihood of all citizens.
