There has been extended debate concerning whether students should focus on one major only or extend their studies to numerous disciplines. In my opinion, it is preferable to opt for a range of subjects, but the decision ultimately relies on the learners’ ability and motivation. It is undeniable that specializing to a qualification offers many benefits, especially regarding future career prospects. As the course duration can shorten considerably compared to the traditional approach, young adults can join the workforce at an earlier age. Therefore, the graduates are exposed to situations that allow them to gain real work experience, which can put them ahead of their peers who are still in school in terms of practical skills. In addition, devoting oneself to a single major allows for greater proficiency, which results in better career advancements. In fact, surveys have shown that many companies prefer hiring vocational graduates, who are trained for a singular profession. These vocational alumni are also shown to earn higher wages than their university counterparts, particularly in the first five years after graduation. On the other hand, there are significant benefits from learning many subjects. First, this approach is better for cognitive development. By absorbing various perspectives from different fields, the students’ brains form neuronal pathways between different regions, which results in neural plasticity, creative and critical thinking enhancement. Moreover, there are advantages regarding personal development, as multidisciplinary undergraduates perform better in school due to the complementary skillsets they gain from contrasting subjects. For example, retrospective thinking ability from philosophy enhances science majors excel in data analysis, and the aesthetic mindset gained from arts help them with clearer visual representations on reports. In conclusion, each university pathway has its own merits; nevertheless, considering the long-term effects, I believe engagement in multiple fields is more advantageous, thanks to the diversity in skills and brain development opportunities it offers. However, it ultimately depends on the students’ motivation and personal goals.
