Task answer
With rapid advancements in medical technology, many individuals live longer lives. People have different opinions on the impact an older population has on governments. This essay will discuss the negative impacts older citizens have on countries, as well as the advantageous skills they can contribute to the economy.
Firstly, the elderly fall ill more frequently and this puts pressure on the health care systems of countries. For example, the World Health Organisation published a study stating that individuals above the age of 58 are 45% more susceptible to chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, than younger adults. Consequently, these illnesses cause people to become severely sick, making up huge medical bills and public health schemes are under pressure with patients in this age group. Thus, it is a financial strain on governments.
On the other hand, the industry related life experience and knowledge older people possess are valuable in helping younger and less experienced individuals, as retirees pass down meaningful life and work lessons. For instance, a successful trading company in America employs its best traders after the age of 65 to teach new employees and share their in-service experience with colleagues. Hence, the positive influence of seniors on the workforce cannot be undermined.
In conclusion, while there are many financial drawbacks for the health sector when individuals live longer lives, the advantages, I believe, outweigh the negative impacts, because they have valuable skills to impart to others. If governments acknowledge the value of our elders to others in the country, they will not see retirees as a burden on the state.
