Task answer
The diagram demonstrates the key steps in turning sugar cane into sugar. There are 7 identifiable processes that come together in a sequence to create the sweet white condiment.
The whole process can take over a year and a half, the majority of that time being spent on growing the sugar cane itself. However, this preliminary stage can be as short as 12 months, due to some years precipitating more than others, causing the canes to sprout faster.
Notably, harvesting is the most interesting step, as it could be done in two ways. After the sugar canes have fully grown, they could either be reaped using a farmer's scythe, or be collected by heavy machinery which run over the whole plantation. The latter, however, does the job more efficiently.
Subsequenctly, the harvested canes are crushed using a mechanical mill, producing a juice-like fluid. Then, This juice is purified through a filter made from limestone. This absorbs all the impurities from the juice, and sieves out big solid chunks. After that, the juice is thickened into a syrup with higher viscosity using an evaporator. This is done by applying heat to the bottom of the whole chamber. The syrup obtained in the last step is then centrifuged in order to separate the sugar crstrals from the water. Finally, the sugar from the centrifugation is dried and cooled in a metal container before being packaged and sold to consumers.
