While some undergraduates desire to learn other subjects concurrently with their main subjects, others believe that concentrating and devoting time to study for a qualification is a better option. I support the latter as it enables learners to both input and output to their best ability, and cultivate a deep level of understanding in a certain field of study. Some scholars choose to study in a liberal-arts styled curriculum, where they are allowed to pursue their academic interests in multiple fields simultaneously. This allows learners to acquire a broad range of knowledge in a limited amount of time, which opens themselves to wider career options. It also matches well with individuals who have various interests and prefer to study multiple fields, rather than someone who is set on a particular subject. However, students should focus on a certain field of study, as concurrent learning leaves students with fewer occasions to acquire deeper knowledge on their main subjects. If a student has many subjects on their plate, it is likely that they would feel demotivated or burnt out for having a heavy workload. In contrast, if students know that they have to engage solely with one subject for qualification, they can create a more focused mindset, and maintain better concentration. This enables learners to grasp a deeper understanding of the subject they pursue, and equip expertise that aids them in applying for professional occupations. Although this option may limit a student's career options, it is preferable in applying for higher-paid jobs that require significant expertise. In conclusion, while studying other subjects along with a main field is an extant option, devoting to one for qualification is significantly a better option, both for the student's mental health, and future career.
