Task answer
There are positive points to owning a house with a backyard, and also, we can find a lot of reasons to choose living in a block of flats. What if we compare both lists of advantages and, maybe, find non-obvious disadvantages? I will try to make a profound analysis.
A separate cosy house with a flourishing garden is a typical picture of the American dream. People in the USA take out enormous loans to buy their own house, a visible proof of life success. In contrast to a house, an apartment doesn't have that meaning.
Surprisingly, the attitude of the Russian people is opposite. A house in a small town or in a village is a symbol of poverty and deprivation. To live in a house means in Russia to live hard, to endure inconvenience like a toilet in a backyard and lack of hot water. On the contrary, an apartment, especially in a high-rise building, signifies the prosperity of the owner.
Different attitudes towards the subject show different mentalities of the Russians and the Americans. But can we find universal pros and cons of living in a house and in a flat? I think so. The house lets its owner live more freely from neighbours, surround himself with flowers and trees, and have more space to keep useful tools in a garage. The apartment gives the possibility to not think about plumbing, repairing and other heavy household chores.
In general, a house gives more space and independence, and a flat gives a life with household support.
What will I choose? I'd chosen a mix of two options: to live in an apartment during the cold season, and move to a house for warm months.
