Task description

Some people advocate for the implementation of a four-day work week to improve work-life balance. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this concept? Justify your opinion in at least 250 words.

Task answer

The proposition that a four-day workweek enhances both productivity and wellbeing is overwhelmingly persuasive. While not every sector can compress hours without operational adjustments, evidence and common sense suggest that focused work, fewer low value meetings, and healthier employees produce better outcomes than longer schedules that invite fatigue. First, output rises when time is deliberately constrained. A shorter week forces teams to eliminate performative busyness—unnecessary status calls, duplicated reports, and ad hoc requests—so that attention is channelled into high leverage tasks. In practice, firms that adopt a four day model typically streamline processes, set clearer goals, and align on measurable outcomes. This shift from presenteeism to deliverables raises the average quality of work and shortens lead times, especially in knowledge roles where deep focus is the primary driver of value. Moreover, wellbeing gains translate directly into business results. Reduced burnout lowers sick leave and turnover, both of which are costly and disruptive. Employees with an extra day for rest, caregiving, or learning return with greater energy and creativity, improving decision making and client service. Crucially, wellbeing is not merely a perk; it underpins sustained performance in cognitively demanding jobs. Sceptics note that customer facing and shift based operations cannot simply close one day a week. However, the model does not require uniform closure: staggered schedules preserve coverage, while automation and asynchronous communication absorb routine demand. Where compression is impractical, hybrid adaptations—such as nine day fortnights or seasonal four day rotations—can achieve much of the benefit without service gaps. In sum, when implemented with outcome metrics, process redesign, and staggered coverage, a four day week is a productivity strategy masquerading as a benefits policy. I therefore strongly agree that it improves both output and wellbeing across a wide range of roles.
